Peculiar Whitby Walking Tour

Are you looking for a daytime Whitby walking tour? Perhaps something a little different from a ghost walk? There is so much more to weird and wonderful Whitby, including the very wonderful and slightly weird Madame Peculiar herself!

The Peculiar Whitby Walking Tour draws from Whitby’s rich folklore heritage, introducing you to the men and women from Whitby’s past that through bravery, determination and sometimes sheer bloody-mindedness achieved extraordinary successes, often in the face of extreme hardship. They are true Whitby legends and it is their stories that you will hear, and how they made the Whitby that we know and love today.

If you are discovering Whitby for the very first time, you will find these alternative stories are the perfect introduction to Whitby’s past. If you have holidayed in Whitby many times before you will be amazed by how much you didn’t already know.

“A cross between Gentleman Jack and Mrs Doubtfire….we enjoyed every minute in Madame Peculiar’s company!”

FAQs

Where does the tour begin?

The tour departs from the Captain Cook Monument on Whitby’s West Cliff and ends at the fabulous Jet Black Jewel in Skinner Street.

Do I have to book in advance?

Yes, if you want to guarantee Madame Peculiar’s appearance. If you don’t book in advance she might make other plans. But if you haven’t booked in advance and you see her at the monument, you can always ask if there is last-minute room on the tour. If so, you can pay by cash or card.

How long is the tour?

The tour lasts approximately 55 minutes. It’s a gentle walk with no steps and plenty of stops. Groups are small.

Is the tour suitable for children and dogs?

Yes and yes. Child tickets are available for ages 7 to 15. Family Tickets are available to keep things pleasingly affordable. The tour isn’t suitable for most under 7s, but you are welcome to bring under 7s for free just so long as you are happy to drop out early if they turn rowdy. Dogs are very welcome unless they turn rowdy. Older children might be called upon to help make sure Madame Peculiar doesn’t turn rowdy.

Do you take groups, e.g. hen parties or special birthdays?

Yes. The tour is the perfect addition to a Whitby celebration, whether you are planning a wild and wacky weekend or a get together for the whole family. Book onto a scheduled tour, or get in touch and we will arrange one at a time to suit you. If you want, Madame Peculiar will make your V.I.P. the star of the show, making this the perfect Whitby hen party or special birthday event.

How accessible is the tour?

The tour is accessible in that it doesn’t have any steps and many of the stops have benches where you can rest if you need to. We do go over cobbles though. If you are unsure, contact us beforehand and we can talk it through. Madame Peculiar is very keen to include everyone, whenever possible, and can make adjustments if you let her know in advance.
